Elizabeth Nicholson (1833-1926) helped form the Indianapolis Woman's Club. She was an advocate of higher education and woman's suffrage, and interested in the history of the Underground Railroad. John Nicholson came to Queensland in 1864 and purchased a property which was named "Grovely", and built "Grovely House". A proposal to build the church was raised in 1866, and work began in 1867. The foundation stone was laid by Sir George Bowen on 23 September 1867. The plan of the church was drawn by Charles Tiffin, Colonial Architect, and the church opened for services in February 1869.
